Things To Do at the Des Moines Farmer’s Market

Going to the Des Moines Farmer’s Market is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. This farmer’s market is one of the best in the United States! In this post I am listing my favorite things to do at the farmer’s market and helpful tips to make your visit a success.

Why I Love the Farmer’s Market

I like the Des Moines Farmer’s Market for more reasons than it just being a trendy place to be. Growing up my family had a greenhouse and gardening business and we were vendors at the farmer’s market. We started this when I was in middle school and I loved helping my mom set up, even if I had to get up at 4 a.m. My favorite part of the market was getting to see all the dogs – and that is still something I love! As my grandma would say, “Everyone and their dog is there.”

Gardening and preparing for the farmer’s market is hard work. I understand the work that goes in to every booth which is why I try to support these small businesses.

What To Do at the Farmer’s Market

Buy Fresh Produce

This may seem like an obvious one, but a lot of people don’t buy veggies when they go to the market! Fresh tomatoes are something I look forward to all year. I just cut them up and eat them with salt and pepper for a snack. I also like to get kohlrabi, which I hadn’t heard of before my family started gardening.

A lot of times the prices are lower than what you can find at the grocery store. I know without a doubt that there is a much better selection of zucchini for less!

Eat!

There are so many good things to eat! I like to get a breakfast bowl or sandwich to start off and then treat myself to something sweet. The baked goods are top notch, one of my favorite sweet treats are Dutch letters!

You’re also going to want to grab a cup of coffee! I tried the best coffee the last time I went, the flavor was blueberry donut!

Buy Some Flowers

You can buy a bundle of fresh flowers for around $10. I don’t know about you, but having fresh flowers in the house brings me so much joy!

Enjoy the Entertainment

There are usually singers and musicians sprinkled throughout the streets. I love to stop and listen! Twice this year I have heard covers of song from The Greatest Showman – which was so fun!

Buy From Local Makers

There are a variety of crafters at the market as well! I love looking at the unique jewelry displays. Additionally, you can find clothing, wall decor, and other home items.

Tips to Make Your Visit to the Des Moines Farmer’s Market a Success

  1. Show up early. If it’s a nice day it will get really busy at around 10 a.m. The market goes from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., I generally try to get there as early to opening as possible.
  2. Bring Cash. Not all vendors will accept cards and you may need cash to pay for a parking spot.
  3. Bring a reusable bag. Not only are they better for the environment, they are so much easier to carry!
  4. Wear comfy shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking, so be sure your feet won’t hate you later.
  5. Wear Layers. If your arrive at 8 a.m. it might be cold, but at around 10 a.m. it can get really warm. A denim jacket is perfect to bring along!
