Cowrie shell jewelry has been popular for a little while, but I’m predicting this trend will be even bigger this summer. Whether they are real shells or not, I think they’re all so cute! Before when I thought of these shells, my mind immediately went to a gift shop on vacation. However, in this post I’m highlighting pieces that don’t look like they came from the gift shop, and are still affordable.
Cowrie jewelry as well as puka shell necklaces have been made popular again by the VSCO girls! The “VSCO girl” style isn’t really my aesthetic, but I can get behind some of these trends.
I purchased my first cowrie shell necklace from a street vendor when I was in Aruba this November. It was perfect to wear on vacation, I don’t think I took it off the whole trip! It looked similar to this necklace from Amazon.
Cowrie Shell Meaning
In my research on this trend, I also learned that there is some symbolic meaning behind these shells. They are viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth (source).

There are a lot of options for cute, affordable cowrie shell jewelry right now. My favorite way to wear this trend is in my hair or on my ears, but these shells are everywhere!
Necklaces
I think I actually prefer the gold “shells” rather than the real ones, or at least the real look. What I love about the gold jewelry is that the necklaces are so easy to layer.
Bracelets & Anklets
Cowrie shell bracelets are perfect to stack! I’m also warming up to the idea of anklets again. It’s been a LONG time since I’ve rocked an anklet, but I could see myself wearing one this summer.
Earrings
I love statement earrings, so of course I had to add some cowrie shell earrings to my collection. I am wearing this set from American Eagle. They’re simple, but can really dress up an outfit.

Hair Accessories
I tend to wear more hair accessories in the summer. I even wrote a blog post last year about summer hair accessories, and I’m still loving all of them! This year I’m adding seashells in with some pearl hair accessories. I am wearing this set which I got from Amazon for $10.99.
