Guide on How To Layer Necklaces

There are a lot of ways to layer necklaces to achieve different looks. And, why wear only one necklace when you can wear multiple? Right now, only wearing one necklace seems a little boring. Don’t be boring! In this guide, you will find inspiration and tips on how to layer necklaces.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I may earn a small commission if you were to purchase any of the items linked at no additional cost to you. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’ve always been conscious of not over accessorizing. Coco Chanel said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” However, I don’t think this rule applies right now because the trend is to add more necklaces, rather than take them away.

Even though layering necklaces can make a statement in an outfit, this trend also feels minimalistic to me. I like to pair my layered necklaces with some mini pavé hoop earrings.

If you can master layering necklaces, you can easily make any outfit look chic, even a simple t-shirt or v-neck. Or a loungewear set, like I’m wearing throughout this post.

How To Layer Necklaces

Here are multiple tips on how to layer your necklaces.

Mix Up the Lengths

To layer necklaces, you’ll want to wear different lengths to make sure each necklace is visible. I created this chart as a reference for you.

Mix Up the Chains

Try wearing a thick gold chain with a dainty chain. The thick gold chains are a huge part of the layering necklace trend. The one I have is from Amazon and was under $15.

Add a Pendant

Layering necklaces doesn’t mean you have to stick to just simple chains. Wear your favorite pendant along with a chunky gold chain. If your pendant necklace isn’t the right length, you can add it to a different chain as well.

The butterfly locket I’m wearing here was first featured in this blog post all about butterfly accessories.

Make It Personalized

Personalized jewelry is very popular right now. You can wear your initials or even your full name around you neck. If you’re a mother, these “MAMA” necklaces have been really popular the last year. A simple necklace like that would be easy to layer as well!

I’m wearing an initial pendant in this photo. This is another Amazon find and it’s under $12. I’ve been seeing a lot of these card initial necklaces as well.

Add Pearls

If you follow along here, you know that I love pearls. So of course I want to add pearls to my layered ensembles. My Baublebar pearl initial necklace was featured all over the blog this summer. Usually I wear it alone, but here I’m wearing it with my chunky gold chain.

Also, here is a dupe of this Baublebar necklace from Amazon.

Buy Necklaces That Are Already Layered

Since layering necklaces is so popular right now, you can easily find options that are already layered. This is a lot easier than putting together the ensemble yourself.

I was gifted this dainty pearl necklace from PEARLSTORY NYC. I love how simple it is, which makes it easy to wear with so many things.

Where to Buy Necklaces For Layering

You don’t have to break the bank to achieve the layered look. Here are a few places you can find necklaces for layering.

Experiment With Necklaces You Already Own

Play around with the necklaces you already own! You probably have some gold dainty necklaces already. Experiment by trying on different combinations to achieve a different look. Of course, you can layer silver necklaces as well.

If you have a pendant necklace, you can simply remove the pendant and just wear a chain as one of the elements in your look.

Flea Markets and Thrift Stores

Many of the necklaces in this post I found at the flea market! I only paid around $3 for them! This includes one of my simple gold chains as well as the butterfly locket pendant. I couldn’t believe how much jewelry I found at the flea market this summer and for such a low price. Thrift stores are worth checking out as well!

If you’re local, I like to attend the What Cheer Flea Market every year.

Amazon and Other Retailers

The only new necklaces that are featured in this post are the initial pendant, the chunky chain necklace, and the PEARLSTORY one. So, most of the new finds are from Amazon. They, of course, have a lot of affordable options. But really, you can find necklaces for layering almost anywhere!
